It is a key and a great transformation that becoming attached to Li Tong in Zhu Xi’s life. Before contacting with Li Tong, Zhu Xi had studied Buddhism and Taoism and influenced by them for more than ten years old; after meeting Li Tong, Zhu Xi began to study Confucianism, so that he became the biggest master of Neo-Confucianism. Thus, we can see the great influence that Li Tong gave Zhu Xi.There were ups and downs in the teaching activities between Li Tong and Zhu Xi, including "Do not agree with each other in thoughts","Questions and Answers through Letters","Establishing Teacher-Student Relationship". Accompany with this process, they had widely and deep exchange in academic, political, and emotional aspects, then a full and rich life world formed between them.It is the primary content that learning from each other by exchanging views between Li Tong and Zhu Xi. Li Tong woke up Zhu Xi from Buddhism and Taoism by his profound and pure knowledge; then Zhu Xi’s attitude towards Li Tong turned from "regarding him as father" to "learning", he also completed the important transformation which was called "Escape from Buddhism and Return to Confucianism ". There was extraordinary meaning for the Neo-Confucianism.Another important content was the different political attention between Li Tong and Zhu Xi in their living world. As the orthodox school of Neo-Confucianism, Li Tong always adhered to the transcendence and independence of "Internal saints" to " External king", so that he could use it to achieving his pursuit of shaping his own ideal personality and uplifting the spirit of the Neo-Confucianism in Northern Song Dynasty, and he did not associate with the common people and lived beyond them; but Zhu Xi insisted on the unity of "Internal saints and External king", and he did his best to turn the former to the latter, making "To Initiate Peace and Security for All Ages" into practice.The relationship between Li Tong and Zhu Xi had become more and more close during the eleven years that they exchanged thoughts. Li Tong was deeply moved by Zhu Xi’s efforts to pursue the "Tao", which brought joy and comfort in his later life. Meanwhile, Li Tong valued Zhu Xi increasingly, and he often showed the desire to reunite with Zhu Xi. After the death of Li Tong, Zhu Xi was so sorrowful that he wrote "Brief Biographical Sketch","Elegies","Funeral Oration" and so on to express he think of his teacher and grieve over his teacher’s death. What was particularly noteworthy was that Zhu Xi had considered Li Tong as an authentic successor of "Tao" in Confucianism, and he gave Li Tong the highest academic status. On the other hand, it also reflected Zhu Xi’s aspiration and determination to inherit the Confucian Orthodoxy.In short, It was a story and "a rare opportunity" that Zhu Xi became attached to Li Tong.
