| The article selects the charity societies of Kunming during the Republican period as the research object and it aims to clarify the charitable activities that non-government funded charity organizations held to relieve the poor during that period and what the effect that those activities produced by means of individual case study. As a result, a more concrete understanding of how those non-government funded charity organizations operated during the Republican period will be attained.The paper will discuss the problem through five sections. The first section mainly describes the philanthropy after the modern times, introduces the development history of traditional charitable thoughts and the carrying out process of the charitable activities. What’s more, the most important thing of this part is to introduce the spring up of latter-day charity organizations. Meanwhile, this part introduces the basic information of charity organizations of the modern times in Yunnan, especially the capital Kunming. The second section mainly analyses the social background,historical origin and institution setting of Kunming’s charity societies in order to clarify the fundamental state of establishment and development of Kunming’s charity societies. The third section mainly studies the institutional improvement and expenditure condition of Kunming’s charity societies. The regulations, systems and the construction of financial institutions are included in institutional aspect, the source of the funds concentrated on the house rents and the operating expenses accounted for a major percentage of the total expenses. The fourth section mainly investigates the relief situation of Kunming’s charity societies, including the relief to abandoned babies and elderly people of no family and the operation of social assistance. The fifth section discusses the social efficiency of the Kunming’s charity societies,which is not only to guarantee the basic life of paupers,but also teaching the almsman’s living skill. |
