It is in the 17 th Century that France initially invaded West Africa.Meanwhile, several forts which used for military and trade affairs were set up along the coast in Senegal. During 19 th century, French colonialists increased their process in each West Africa colony, particularly in Senegal. Owing to Senegal’s geographical location, French colonialists paid more attention on "cultivating" this area by means of a series of measures on politics, economy and culture. What did these colonialists want was to enlarge Francophone area. From the late 19 th Century, assimilation which focused on economy, politics, culture and identity was adopted as a more tight policy in dealing with problems occurred in colonies. Economically, taking tight measures to control Senegal’s economic activities. Politically, establishing French Courts to substitute local muslim court. Culturally, the French colonialists used French language to replace local language in order to nurture the black élite. Identically, encouraging local people to get French citizenship. It should be underlined that the assimilation policy was nothing but a tool used by French colonialists to serve their colonial govern. In addition to Senegal, Algeria, mid-west America and other colonies were under this policy. In terms of extent and influence of assimilation, Senegal was most heavily impacted. This article is divided into four chapter. Chapter 1 focuses on the concept of assimilation and tries to analyze in which background it was bored. Chapter 2 mainly deals with the concrete measures implemented by French colonialists, which is the core of the whole paper. Chapter 3 tries to compare and contrast local people’s reactions to assimilation; so as to proof the assimilation policy is not all favored but its plotter. Last chapter, Chapter 4 manages to analyze the influence of assimilation and also solve the problem of to what extent Senegal has been assimilated. After listing and studying the historical facts, conclusion will be drawn that Senegal was partially assimilated, which can be corroborated by the following aspects including economy, politics, culture and identity. As a matter of fact, the assimilation is a product due to the colonial expansion of capitalism. French colonialists adopted this kind of policy to obtain more profits at the cost of the colony. Assimilation’s impact on Senegal is still existed and may last for a long time.
