Studies constantly show that students demonstrate better performance in subject proficiency, second language development, as well as English development. In recent years, Chinese immersion programs have been developing rapidly in the United States, which have become a force to be reckoned with in promoting Chinese language and culture. At the same time, Chinese immersion programs come in various forms and models and generate different results. This study compares the teaching practice conducted by two teachers in different programs, and finds that the nature of school, program design and teaching methodology affects student performance. Content-based instruction is an effective method in Chinese immersion program as it combines teaching subjects and teaching language together, which helps students develop cognitive ability and language proficiency.
