Imperial-harem competing plays like Golden Beauty, Beauty Calculating, The Legend of ZhenHuan are extremely prevalent in the past decades all over China which lead to plenty of social and academic controversy as well as scoring high viewership rating and catch great attention of many experts in TV series. Nowadays, people evaluate one play more on its character portrayal due to which arouse deep and unforgettable feelings rather than the plot setting. In academic circle, experts analyze the competing plays from perspectives of feminism,narratology and aesthetics at all times while there is scarcely research on character portrayal.However, it is character portrayal that determines the success of the imperial harem competing plays. Thus in this article, I attempt to analyze characterization based on esthetics, culture and acceptability of the audiences to provide certain theoretical basis for a successful play.This article is divided into seven parts, including introduction, five chapters and the conclusion part.The introduction gives a general description of topic background, current research situation of the competing play and some research methods used in this article.Chapter Ⅰ defines Imperial harem competing plays and analyze the meaning, basis and the main points in character portrayal.Chapter Ⅱ talks about how to portray characters from the point of views of male, female and binary opposition..Chapter Ⅲ analyze the reason why people are fond of this kind of play and the particular languages, music, colors and distinctive aesthetic feelings it brought to the audience on the basis of aesthetics.Chapter Ⅳ gives the further analysis of the characters which implied broad and profound Chinese culture as well as the negative effect contrary to dominant culture from cultural perspective and the hidden cultural value of metaphor in addition.Chapter Ⅴ points out the problems of character portrayal and the way of innovation in the future to create a better role apart from providing some inspiration for researchers.Conclusion part describes the problems, summary and expectation to character portrayal in image display, the aesthetic cognition and cultural inheritance.
