"Ancestors Golcourt" Motif Index

Folk literature is the crystallization of human wisdom and common cultural wealth, penetrating into every field of people’s life. As a part of social science, folk literature is the object of folklore and other scholars. It involves a wide range of content, reflecting the cultural level and psychological characteristics of the nation. Any kind of society and language has its own unique folk literature, and the Kazak is no exception. The research works is still a pressing problem. The research works from different angles, one is from motif and type. This approach makes us more clearly about folk works’historical roots and cultural connotation.Speaking of type and motif, we have to think of the Historical-Geographical School in Finland. The school divides folk literature by type to determine the origin of folk works. Since then, this research method has been used in the world. Later, American scholar Stith Thompson using Antti Aarne’s method, listing the world motif index of folk literature, publishing in 1955 in six volume book " Motif Index of Folk Literature".In this study, I will be based on the parent index of Stith Thompson to analyze the motif of the Turkic literature "The Books of Dede Qorqut". The version I have chosen is published in 1999 from Almaty Encyclopedia press and the description of The Books of Dede Qorqut (Dresten version).This research consists of three chapters. Some important categories and concepts of typological theory are introduced in the introduction part, the introduction part also include The research methods used in the process of compiling and analyzing, and the research results of domestic and foreign scholars. The first chapter will introduce the motif and its characteristics, AT classification and motif classification of Stith Thompson. The second chapter will list the motif of story, and compared with Stith Thompson’s. In the third chapter based on Stith Thompson’s index I will introduce the formula in the the The Books of Dede Qorqut. I will give my translation in the final additional material and the translation of Stith Thompson’s index from part A to part Z.The conclusion of this paper is that:from the common people’s point of view, folk literature works are the works of folk entertainment. But from the point of view of scholars, there is culture carrier in the works. We can learn common ground and different points through the analysis of the minimum composition and the motif of folk literature. In the study, we found a lot of the same motif, at the same time, we also found unique motif that associated with the nomadic life and Turkic ethnic customs.
