"Dialogue" And Translation Under Gadamer 's Hermeneutics

Understanding is the core of hermeneutics. Gadamer’s hermeneutics is the recent development of western hermeneutics, with special attention to the interactivity of understanding. He argues that process of understanding a text carries the feature of dialogue, shown by the dialogue between text and reader also the one between reader and writer. As the basis of understanding text, translation is inevitably connected with hermeneutics. The study introduces the development of western hermeneutics,focusing on the impact of Gadamer’s hermeneutics on translation. The relationships between understanding, explanation, dialogue and translation are explored from the perspective of Gadamer’s hermeneutics. The author claims the process of understanding are: the interpretation of text; the dialogue between reader and text; the translation of text(here refers to broad sense translation). Therefore, understanding is the basis and realization of translation. Understanding can be regarded as translation.Hermeneutics is closely connected with translation studies. Translation study from hermeneutics will contribute to a objective understanding of translator’s subjectivity,re-translation and misreading; also led to the format of hermeneutics school in western translation theory.
