The United States’ intervention is a significant cause for the existing dispute betweenChina and Japan in terms of Diaoyu Islands to this day. According to the internationaltreaties, Diaoyu islands, occupied by Japan, were supposed to be returned to China alongwith Taiwan, Penghu islands after the World War II. The United States, however, for itsown interests, has adopted the policy of antagonism and blockade to the new China, making the Diaoyu island issue continue as a dispute between China and Japan. During theCold War, the United States quite strictly held a neutral stance on the sovereignty of theDiaoyu islands. After the end of the Cold War, However, due to the change of internationalpattern and the rise of China, the United States adjusts its policy on the Diaoyu islandsissue, and gradually shows more and more of its support for Japan. The “collision incident”occurring in September2010makes the tension on the Diaoyu islands issue continuouslyescalate. The Diaoyu islands issue has been turned from the state of “shelving disputes”kept in tacit understanding by China and Japan government since the establishment of theirdiplomatic ties to a trend being salient and complicated. The escalation of the Diaoyuislands dispute is closely related to the “return to the Asia-Pacific” strategy of the UnitedStates, and the complicated and escalating dispute provides more favorable opportunitiesfor the United States to intervene. The United States has made major changes in policy onthe Diaoyu islands since2010.In this paper, I mainly study the evolution of the US policy on the Diaoyu islands issueafter the World War II, with special focus on the changes of that issue following the“collision incident”, and explore the causes of America’s policy adjustment. On this basis, Itry to predict the trend of the US policy on the Diaoyu islands issue in the future. This isgood for us to better recognize the essence of the Diaoyu islands issue, and hold the key todealing with the dispute, and finally arrive at a favorable solution for China.
