Political legitimacy is one of the key propositions of political science, and also is avery complex category. Depending on the definition of the concept of legality, legitimacytheory can be divided into normative theory of legitimacy, empirical theory of legitimacyand reconstructive theory of legitimacy. Political power is the core of legitimacy.Legitimacy includes the connotation, basic source, legitimacy crisis and legitimacyclassification. Broadly speaking, the legitimacy issue is about whether one political powercan get public recognition and obedience. According to normative theory of legitimacy andempirical theory of legitimacy, The political legitimacy foundation mainly includes thesystem, effectiveness, ideology and personal charm. The power will have to face the crisisof legitimacy if it is overly dependent on a certain legitimate resource or lost the originalresources. Political legitimacy is a new paradigm and tool to analyze political dominationproblem.Contemporary Chinese political legitimacy experienced overly dependent on ideologyand charismatic legitimacy period to overly dependent on the economic performancelegitimacy period. With the deepening of reform and the transformation of society, thecurrent political legitimacy is facing many challenges. The traditional ideologicallegitimacy and economic performance legitimacy are being weakened, and there has beenburgeoning crisis of legitimacy. To this end, the reconstruction of contemporary China’spolitical legitimacy is imminent. This paper argues that the new goal of the construction ofChina’s political legitimacy is to establish a complex type of legitimacy. It should dependmainly on economic performance legitimacy and the law-rational legitimacy, combinedwith ideology.
