With the continuous improvement of people's living standard, cars have gradually come into families and become the necessities of life, however, widespread popularity of the car leads to some new problems, such as the urban traffic jams and so on. Although the construction of road infrastructure has increased in recent years, traffic conflicts are still very obvious because of the rapid growth of traffic flow. Furthermore, losses in economy, politics, information and other related fields caused by the traffic congestion are enormous. In addition, there are more hidden losses, such as environmental pollution and the deterioration of the investment environment. To ease the urban traffic pressure and improve the efficient use of roads and vehicles, this paper presents a design of real-time traffic flow information display terminal. In this paper, the design centers on microprocessor S3C2440A. Specifically speaking GPS is used for global positioning, CDMA modules for wireless communication, the embedded Linux operating system for processing information that has been received, and the information displaying application developed by MiniGUI for displaying real-time traffic information and the vehicle location information on the electronic map, In this way, the real-time road traffic information could be displayed on the LCD screen in the graphical form. Meanwhile the touch screen provides a friendly man-machine interface. This paper firstly states the research situation of the real-time traffic information system and its applications both at home and abroad; secondly proposes the methods of realizing GPS positioning, the receive, process of real-time traffic information and display it in electronic map, and the graphical user interface design; and in the end analyzes the application prospects of the system as well as aspects needing improving.
