With the raid development of multimedia, the large number of data information is needed to transfer and storage. As the channel bandwidth is fixation, it is necessary to compress video images in order to meet the development requirements of multimedia technology. Therefore, video compression has become a hot research topic.Firstly, this paper analyzes the necessity of digital video compression from the two aspects of video transmission and storage and discuss the possibilites of digital video compression from the all kinds of redundancy in the video. Secondly, the paper analyzes the digital video compression coding methods, including lossless co-mpression and lossy compression. The paper discuss the coding principles and coding process of the run-length coding, Huffman coding, motion compensation coding and two-dimensional and two-dimensional discrete cosine transform coding. After the in-depth analysis of video compression algorithm, the paper discuss the MPEG-2 video compression standard, in particular MPEG-2 in the class the grade, MPEG-2 video standard specifies the structure, MPEG-2 encoding bit rate control, and theory of the MPEG-2 standard codec. Then, the paper carries out a detailed an-alysis on MPEG-2 transport stream, including the stream structure MPEG-2 transpo-rt stream, the logical structure of transport stream and transport stream multiplexing and transmission are given detection and analysis of stream flow chart. Finally, the paper gives a decoding system design, system uses the SAA7214 as the transmission stream demultiplexer, After the demultiplexing using SAA7215 as the decoder that decodes the basic streat, but also it completes the DAC on the digital video signal and output analog video signal. One of the SAA7214 and SAA7215 using DSP conf-iguration, using CPLD logic for each module to provide timing. The paper introduc-es the system and program flow chart, as well as DSP, SAA7214 and SAA7215 procedures.
