With the rapid development of information technology, the requirement on multimedia communication becomes higher. In the actual application, the same system always needs to process both low-resolution video images and high-resolution still images. However, different types of image data is distinct in statistical characteristics, we must use diverse image compression methods to get a better performance. It posed a rigorous test to the restricted hardware resources.In this thesis, with combination of the trends on image compression technology at home and abroad, integration of still and moving image compression algorithm is studied in detail based on the existing image compression theories. Then, the thesis descries the hardware implement of integrating compression algorithm on image and video.The system chooses ADV202 as the JPEG2000 codec chip, which is responsible for still image compression based on wavelet transform, uses ADSP-TS201 with high processing performance to do motion estimation, and combines with the advantages of still and moving image compression. System can be able to process the still image and video image in real time, supports both lossless and lossy still image compression, and the compression ratio can be adjusted online. Besides, it also supports compression rate controlled accurately in video image processing mode.
