IPv4 may pass away and IPv6 is coming up to us. In June of 1998, CERNET joined 6Bone. In March of 2004, CERNET2 offered IPv6 service to users formally. With the shortage of IP address and other reasons, the arrangement paces of IPv6 network are obviously accelerated. People are full of limitless moving to IPv6 network as a result of its particular technological characteristic.Distance education has already become mainstream developing direction in international and domestic education. Its quality is enough to influence the educational level of a country. There are many factors of restraining the development of distance education. And the most basic and also the most fundamental factor is the construction and upgrading of the network infrastructure. IPv6 comes in good time and its many characteristics have brought another spring on the development history of distance education.Based on the background, this paper discussed the technological characteristics of IPv6 and their applications in distance education in detail. The article is generally divided into five chapters. The first chapter involves many thought of this topic, including the basis and value of the topic, domestic and international research state and research method, etc. The second is a technical research survey. It analyzes IPv6 in an overall and profound manner and compares it with IPv4 in order to find the technological characteristics of IPv6, to work for the next chapters. It discusses theoretically how the technological characteristics of IPv6 be given full play to the distance education, and carries on the bright prospect to the distance education based on IPv6. The fifth chapter mainly utilizes OPNET Modeler 10.0 to implement three pieces of emulation experiment for some function tests on IPv6, and verifies the implement case of the IPv6 network system. It examines the exactness of the proposition from practice.How to give play to the technological characteristics of IPv6 in distance education is a prospective work. But it is essential to the IPv6 network of distance education that is implementing or will implement, and is value to improve the scale, quality and benefit of distance education.
