With the State Administration of Radio Film and Television promoting analog television digitized, the demand of digital set-top box in China is increasing rapidly. But, the demand of set-top box is largely different in our country, especially to the player system, the core component of set-top box. So, it is urgent to develop a reusable and extensible digital set-top box playing system. In this thesis, the idea of middleware is employed. Based on the hybrid model which combines static model and dynamic model, a digital television media presenting middleware is designed. Static model is employed to complete the function design of middleware with hierarchical design methodology. The system is divided into three interdependent and mutually independent layers, and each layer provides services to and ignorant of the upper one. The idea of component-based design is also introduced, in which the functional modules are packaged as components, and all functional components work together by the means of inter-component messaging and interface call. The interactive relationship among the media presenting middleware components is designed by dynamic model in detail, which refines the design from the perspective of dynamic work in order to reduce the design risk.A novel synchronization method which combines intra-media synchronization and inter-media synchronization is proposed to solve the audio and video synchronization presenting issue. This new middleware has been tested on a number of software and hardware platforms and the results show that this middleware has some improvement and optimization in the aspect of reusability and extensibility compared with the primary digital set-top box playing system.
