With the development of science and technology, as well as people's living standard, people's requirements on automobile variety individuality and the renewal speed, are rising constantly. China is large country on automobile production and consuption, facing the state and enterprise competition under the environment of market globalization the reverse engineering technology plays an important role. With complex surface structures and high quality requirements, the automobile hub is an important part relation to the functionality and beauty of the whole automobile and one of the determinants of vehicle performances. Our country has obtained great progress in the design and development of hubs, but there is still a gap compared with other advanced countris. Therefore, this work is to research on the application of reverse engineering technology in the design of automile hub under the background introduced above.In this paper, the advanced data acquisition systems at home and abroad were introduced and the error sources and control methods were analyzed. The theories of curves and surfaces of the reverse engineering technology were expounded, the construction methods of NURBS curves and surfaces were researched and then the methods of NURBS curves were summarized according to the reconstruction model of the automobile hub.According to the features of reverse engineering software, the fine data processing methods with software modules were analyzed and the fast, convenient and high-quality reverse engineering design flow to construct automobile hub model were got.Taking a 16×7 inches aluminum alloy hub as the research object, the operations such as data acquisition, data extraction, surface reconstuction, surface smoothing and surface smoothing evaluation were performed with the basic theories and methods of reverse engineering, and then the three-dimensional digital model of the automobile hub was constructed. The continuity in the process of curves and surface construction were discussed, the surface smoothing algorithm was analyzed the reconstruction surface was examinaed and assessed at last. It has been proved that the theories and methods analyzed in the paper are effective to construct the model of automobile hub.
