As one of the core functions of network, fault management can ensure the network availability and reliability. Also, It can prevent failure to some extent. As the network applications and network size increases, timely and accurate discovery of network failures is becoming increasingly difficult. In recent years, fault detection based on active detection technique has been paid more attention because of its high efficiency, adaptability and low cost characteristics. At present, failure detection technology based on the active mode still has some problems in practical applications, the selected detection set meet the network environment which is evaluated by a single evaluation function, When detects faults, this kind of point set could not guarantee the performance under other quality functions.This paper researches four quality functions in the network and proposes three probe selection methods for fault detection which can guarantee the performance of selected probe sets under a variety of quality functions. The main contents include:(1) The summary of the detection method based on active fault detection methods and trends; (2) Study the existence of several typical quality functions in the network and analyze the physical meaning of these quality functions; (3) model the managed network and propose a highly efficient detection algorithm (TDSS) for fault detection which can determine the situation in the network environment and select the a variety of detection for quality function. (4)Propose the concept of degree of fault detection and improve the TDSS algorithm to enable it to maintain good performance in noisy environment for the uncertainty network environment (5) Propose the MQFO algorithm which solves the problem of performance difference under a variety of quality function (6) Verify the effectiveness of the algorithms through simulation experiments and analyze the experiments' results...
