In recent years, as the scale of the Internet becomes larger and the mobile ability of the terminals is enhanced, the problems that the Internet essentially does not support mobility and doesn't have routing scalability become more and more serious. In order to solve the problems, the idea of the ID/locator separation has been suggested and some solutions based on the idea have been proposed. Because the traditional mobility management solutions of the Internet may cause the problems of the single point failure and the communication bottleneck, they are not suitable for the networks introducing the ID/locator separation. Moreover, the existing mobility management solutions based on the ID/locator separation have some limitations:1) Difficulties in deployment.2) Security problems.3) Inefficienct bandwidth utilization due to the introduction of the encapsulation and the new options. Hence, a new mobility management solution based on the ID/locator separation is needed. This thesis firstly introduces the idea of the ID/locator separation based on the analysis of the problems in the Internet and their reasons. The effect of the mobility management caused by the ID/locator separation is analyzed. Then the technologies and research status of the mobility management are summarized. And the main design issues of mobility management solutions for the environment of the ID/locator separation are proposed based on the analysis of the problems caused by the existing solutions.Following this, a novel network architecture based on the ID/locator separation is proposed to solve the problems in the existing solutions. The format of the locator, the identifier, and the mapping system storing the relationship between them are designed. In addition, the thesis proposes a mobility management solution based on destination address overwritten (Mobility Management based on the ID/Locator Separation-MILS), which involves the registration, the intra-domain location update and the handoff control, as well as the inter-domain location update and the handoff control. Furthermore, the data transfer procedure is also described according to the proposed solution. The strongpoint of destination address overwritten is also summarized. Finally, two theoretical models are introduced to analyze the performace of MILS. Evaluation results show that MILS has low signaling cost and handoff delay and the cost for transferring packets is reduced.
