Abstract/Summary:
Neil Postman, an important media culture researcher, critic and educator, pointedly and deeply criticizes the E-medium's profound impact to the cultures in post-modern industrial times, which causes the formulation of his unique theory and perspective of the Media Ecology. This paper focus on and summarizes the theory of Media Ecology of Neil Postman, and tries to make an assessment of his thought. At the last, the author reviews the current situations of today's media ecology by using the theory of Media Ecology of Neil Postman.This paper consists of four sections:Firstly, the paper reviews the definition of the Media Ecology. and expatiates the theory framework of the Media ecology, which includes Static analysis, Evolution analysis and Influence research of the media; Secondly, the paper summarizes and expatiates Neil Postman's important theoretical propositions and research conclusions including "The media is metaphor", "Technopoly" and "Media Education"; Thirdly, the paper make a comprehensive assessment of the Neil Postman's theory, summarize the humanism position and the inclination of technological pessimism of Neil Postman's theory, and to comment on the limitations of Neil Postman's theory, which includes Reductionism and Elitism; Lastly, the author tries to use Neil Postman's theory of Media Ecology to review today's major media -- the Internet medias and reveal how to develop media education of Internet media.
