Driver Display Unit for metro is a platform which is used for driver and on-board equipments to exchange information, it is an important part of TCMS. With the rapid development of the railway, the traditional human-machine interface of driver display unit can not meet the needs of the future railway. There is an urgent need to design a user-friendly HMI which can show various kinds of informations, so it can provide effective imformations and safe operation instructions to driver, that it can help driver to deal with sudden failure in the driving process.Driver Display Unit is an embedded system, which is designed and achieved in two parts, hardware and software. x86 development board is selected as DDU hardware platform. On this basis, embedded Linux operation system is builded to fit the function requirement of DDU. In this, an open source software called Buildroot is utilized to complete the work includes cross compiler tool chain, booting system, cutting out kernel and making root file system and so on. And selected embedded Qt as GUI development tool, use of signals and slots mechanism, complete the communication between complicated objects. Meanwhile, in order to meet the needs of users, we use the embedded database SQLite in Qt to maintain and manage bulk datas such as fault records, running routes, etcs. In the end of this paper, evaluating the Driver Display Units HMI after establishing comprehensive evaluation model based on Grey theory.This subject shows a design of Driver Display Unit for metro with embedded system as its core, which is based on embedded Linux operating system, including graphic display of the train state imformations. There is an examination proceed in the lab. The result shows that, data exchange normally between DDU and CCU, the Driver Display Unit has friendly HMI, train state informations are shown clearly. As a whole, the system is concurrent, stable, reliable and easy to upgrade and extend. The project has basically completed the design of localization for our next generation of Drivers Display Unit for metro to provide a new technical ideas.
