AVS standard is China's own development of digital audio and video codec technology national standards. The seventh part of the AVS-Mobile Video standard(AVS-M) is developed for motion picture compression in the applications of digital storage media, network streaming and multimedia communications. It has high compression, high quality and relatively low hardware complexity. With the third generation of mobile communication technology's growing popularity as well as the fourth generation advances, enabling AVS-M decoding in the packet network multimedia services based on embedded technology, video telephony and remote video monitoring becomes a research focus. AVS-M video coding standard, while obtaining good image quality it ensures a high compression ratio and low encoding complexity (theoretically 70% complexity of AVS video coding standard), which introduces a range of advanced video coding technology, and provides error resilience and network adaptation. Researches of AVS-M codec technology in many areas of mobile multimedia applications have real value. The main work is to study the AVS-M decoder features and process technology, design and implementation of AVS-M video decoder, and optimization. As for Samsung S3C2440 processor, an embedded AVS-M video player design is then proposed and implemented which does not need to add a specific AVS-M video decoder chip, using ARM-Linux operating system and multimedia player such as Mplayer as the software platform. Finally, through adding AVS-M decoder to the player's library to enable AVS-M decoding.
