A Historical Interpretation On News Objectivity

News objectivity is one of the core concepts of journalism. Along with the process of its appearance, formation and further development, people's understanding of news objectivity is continuously deepening. The principle of objectivity was strictly implemented by journalists during the initial stage since it's born, as there was no personal feelings intermingled in the news reports. And then, with the dramatic changes in the outside world, the rapid development of journalism and the gradual improvement of the theoretical research capacity, the press began to question the principle of objectivity which led to the challenge and even subversion of its previous dominance. Meanwhile, the audience's trust in the news reports also fell down into the ground. The mass didn't blindly worship the objectivity anymore, when some of them even doubted the possibility of its existence. However, thanks to the relevant theories of journalism and the innovation in practice, as well as the strong vitality of the principle of objectivity, it once again won the people's recognition in recent years and became an effective way by which the journalists led the audience infinitely close to the truth.This paper mainly adopts the literature analysis, the comparison and the sociological analysis. By the detailed examination to the development history of news objectivity, it attempts to study the process of the cognitive change of the principle in the academia and the journalism industry from different ages, and analyze the deep causes behind in order to provide useful information to help the press grasp a more complete understanding and flexible use of the principle which is also the purpose and significance of this paper.This paper will focus on the analysis of news objectivity. To be specific, it's divided into three parts. In the first part, it clearly defines the concept of news objectivity, sums up the links and differences between it's treated as a theory and a way of reporting, and briefly introduces the social environmental factors on the principle which enriches the content of news objectivity from a sociological point of view. Secondly, this paper describes the attitude changes of the press and academia from the fanaticism following news objectivity to criticize it, and analyzes the causes of these doubts as well as the problems revealed in the principle of objectivity from multiple perspectives. At last, this paper expounds how news objectivity gets rational development in spite of the controversy, and gradually becomes more mature.
