With the rapid growing communication service requirement of the society, the confliction between video communication and transmission capability becomes more and more prominent. Due to the huge volume of digital video data, the transmission and store of the digital video require very high transmission bandwidth and very huge capacity. These high requirements have become the biggest obstacles to popularize digital video communication applications. At the same time, these obstacles promote the application of the video compression coding. Video compression is being regarded as one new research hotspot by more and more researchers.Based on different applications and different compression tools, many international video compression standards have been established by the international organizations. This dissertation introduce the survey of standards for video compression and main parts of MPEG-2 standards: the system, the video etc, expatiates the principles and arithmetic of video compression: discrete cosine transform (DCT), quantilization encoding, variable length encoding.In the wireless multimedia transport, video is the most important services. The bandwidth it needs is also the biggest, therefore, before transporting in wireless channel, video should be compressed. In this paper, we introduce many classic video compressed method which based on the video compressed technology, just like RLC, Huffman coding, predictive coding, predictive coding based on motion compensation and DCT coding. All these coding method are well used in MPEG-2 technology. In order to optimize the MPEG encoder, the second chapter focuses on the fast algorithms for three bottlenecks of encoder, DCT and motion estimation and motion compensation. Because MPEG-2 has so many advantages, it is dominant in the video transmission, storing, etc. Many current video streams are compress by MPEG-2. The third chapter focuses onMPEG-2 international standards, introducing some key parts about video of MPEG-2 standards. The forth chapter provide a MPEG-2 coding system which uses PHILIPS' MPEG-2 coding chip-SAA6752 and give some debugging results. The last chapter provide a MPEG-2 decoding system which uses C-CUBE' MPEG-2 decoding chip-ZIVA4.1 and give some debugging results.In the last part of paper, some debugging programs are presented, some of them are programmed with assembly language and the others are programmed with C language. This programs can be download to DSP through JTAG interface of DSP emulator after compiled. After this, initialization and control of all periphery blocks are complete.
