With the rapid development of multimedia communication, video communication is becoming an important issue in the research area of communication today. So it is very important to compress the huge video data effectively, which has already attracted considerable attentions recently. The important challenges associated with the video compression techniques are to make source coders both error-resilient and network-adaptive. So it is practically significant to study scalability and transmission robustness of video coding. The wavelet-based video coding techniques have high compression efficiency as well as full scalability. And the wavelet-based video coding methods are studied in this dissertation, and multiple description video coding techniques are adopted to enhance the transmission robustness of video. The main work is as follows:1. The problems existing in the motion estimation in the wavelet domain are analyzed, and the redundant wavelet techniques are adopted to improve the performance of the motion estimation in the wavelet domain. The multi-resolution motion estimation (MRME) is studied, and a new MRME method based on redundant wavelet is proposed. Furthermore, based on the redundant wavelet video coding system, a new multiple description coding scheme is proposed, which can enhance the transmission robustness with low redundancy.2. Three-dimension wavelet video coding techniques are studied, and the motion compensation temporal filtering (MCTF) is analyzed. A block-split bidirectional motion estimation scheme is proposed to deal with the unconnected pixels in MCTF. And the lifting schemes are used in MCTF, which allows perfect reconstruction with sub-pixel MCTF, and improves the coding efficiency. Moreover, a multiple description scalable video coding scheme is proposed based on the three-dimension wavelet video coder. The proposed scheme can enhance the transmission robustness of video over unreliable networks, as well as adopt the scalable coding for the heterogeneous networks.3. The content delivery networks (CDNs) techniques are studied. And based on polyphase downsampling, a new multiple description video coding scheme using three-dimension wavelet techniques is proposed for CDNs.4. The characteristics of ray space images are analyzed, based on which the wavelet-based video coding is studied. The results show that it is effective to use three-dimension wavelet-based video coding method to compress ray space image data.
