The canal operation control system is a large-scale, complex control system. Timely and adequate water supply is an essential requirement for any water supply system. The operation control system functions to increase the canal's dispatch capability and water transportation efficiency as well as prevent over- or insufficient water supply, aiming to make full use of the water resource. On basis of the unsteady characteristic of canal system in operation, the paper demonstrates the possibility and necessity of the application of robust control to canals, as well as the application of robust control to the canal control system. In order to approach an easier way to explain the application of robust control theory in resolving the canal operation control problem, the writer demonstrates the subject in the method of state space and by discretizing and linearizing the St.Venant Equation. With an emphasized introduction on the robust control theory and optimized control ideas, the paper reveals how toapply optimized H_∞ control theory to the canal control. In order to facilitate the application ofrobust control to the canal, the paper makes an analysis on the system stability, selection and computation of weight function and augmented matrix, as well as the design of optimizedH_∞ control devices. This paper also describes the state space of the canal through MATLAB robusttools, dynamically simulates the system by MATLAB, and with SIMULINK analyzes the results of the dynamic simulation. Finally, the paper makes a further discussion on the future and research directions of the subject after a summary of the existing research.Though the application of robust control to the canal operation system is rather immature and still remains in research and discussion without a precedent in real application after a great many of researchers' hard work, the significance of the subject is obvious, especially under the real situation of water resource shortage. This paper only makes a primary exploration on the subject, hoping it can be helpful for future research..
