Ad Hoc networks composed of mobile terminal nodes with wireless communication device are typically characterized by their multi-hop, temporary and un-center, can be quickly built up in anywhere and at anytime, needn't be supported by pre-existing infrastructure, and every terminal can move freely and equally. With the increasing need of Multimedia services in Ad Hoc networks, providing QoS support is proposed. However, considering the moving of nodes in Ad Hoc networks and constantly variety of network topology, at the same time, due to the compute-capability and storage-capacity of mobile nodes are low and the energy sources are limited, how to design routing protocols which support QoS require is challenging and have been the important content of Ad Hoc networks research.Firstly, this thesis describes the basic characteristic of Ad Hoc networks, introduces the existing unicast routing protocols in details and analyzes as well as simulates them using OPNET Modeler. Then it introduces the issues of QoS support and energy saving in Ad Hoc networks. On the basis of comparing the existing algorithms about QoS routing protocols, it proposes a bandwdith constrained QoS routing protocol based on power control. OPNET Modeler is used to analyze performance and problems of such protocol. Finally, conclusions of this thesis and suggestions for future research are given. This thesis has six chapters as belows:Chapter 1 introduces the concepts , history, characteristic, research hotspot, future application of Ad Hoc networks and the source and research meaning of this thesis.Chapter 2 describes the basic principle of unicast routing protocols in Ad Hoc networks.Chapter 3 introduces the concept of network simulator, proposes the simulator frame in OPNET Modeler and implements some typical unicast routing protocols of Ad Hoc networks such as AODV, DSR, and TORA. Simulation results are analyzedat last.Chapter 4 introduces the issues of QoS support in Ad Hoc networks and describes some typical QoS routing protocols.Chapter 5 introduces the issues of energy saving in Ad Hoc networks. Then it proposes a bandwdith constrained QoS routing protocol (Ad Hoc QoS Routing Protocol) based on power control. Finally it analyzes the performance in different scenes of such protocol using OPNET Modeler.Chapter 6 summarizes this thesis. At the same time, suggestions for future research are given. This thesis is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (90304018).
