Modern mobile communication development has mainly gone through two generations. The first generation of mobile communication systems (1G) was analog cellular system for mobile communication standard with the main voice services. Second generation mobile communication system (2G) is digital cellular system which can provide low-speed data business. With development of the network, data and multimedia communications have had rapid development momentum. Third generation mobile communication system (3G) is a kind of communication system than can provide variety of types and high-quality multimedia business to achieve seamless global coverage, with a global roaming capability, compatible with the fixed network, and can communicate with small portable terminals at any time, any place for any kind of communications .This thesis introduces the entire software design process of a 3G data card on the basis of an exercitation that I personally involved in the development of a project in Shenzhen, including the structure of the system design, interface design, communication module and public module design, as well as the final detailed design and coding of SMS(short message service) module that I personally involved in. In the end, the thesis presents an extended framework design model based on XML messages.The software structure founded according to the extended framework has the characteristic that it can add new function module while needs not modify the code or just makes less modifications. This is also the innovative aspect of the thesis. The thesis is organized as following:Chapter 1 provides a brief description of the project background, the status quo of research and the contents of study.Chapter 2 introduces basic commands, and then describes design principles of project interface.Chapter 3 introduces design objectives of the project, functions to be achieved and operational environment, and then presentes a summary of the structure of theentire system design, modular division and the design of communication methods.Chapter 4 illuminates detailedly the entire system design process on the basis of preceding three chapters, first gives the system's UML modelling, and then introduces system interface design, and finally makes a comprehensive analysis of the system framework design and communication design from correspondence-communication processes, as well as some key components of the design and so on , basically describes system design concepts.Chapter 5 describes the SMS module design details with which I take as the representative submodule of system. This part mainly explaines the background module design of SMS module.Charpter 6 illustrates the use of open source technology in the project, these modules are also an integral part of the whole system.The final chapter gives conclusions of the thesis, presents an extended framework design model based on XML messages, and finally summarizes what I had learned from participating in the project.
