Although the development of 3-D CAD techniques has speeded up the course of industrial informatization and heightened the industrial productivity, the industries are still faced with many new problems when the new manufacturing theories such as collaborative design and virtual manufacturing are put forward. On one hand, the informational communication within industries are decreasing despite that the date of 3-D CAD system is increasing; on the other hand, the virtual designers fail to accomplish the interactive 3-D design due to the substantive data generated by the 3-D CAD system and the transmitting speed limited by the available bandwidth. Thus, the main task at present is to how to share the design projects and information over networks quickly and efficiently.This paper presents a web publishing system of 3-D manufacturing model on the windows platform with the object-oriented method. 3D geometric compression technique and browser plug-in development technique, based on 3D modeling software-JhSolid, which can deliver the models in a 3-D file format of little data to enhance the inspecting and operating competence. This system accomplishes the dynamic function of looking over 3-D models, product structures, material lists and properties of designing files merely with IE browser. And its distributing objects consist of non-engineers, salesmen, customers and suppliers.This paper has accomplished the following targets:Deep study the 3D geometric compression technique and put forward a 3D geometric compression algorithm based on the spreading method which can compress the triangle mesh data of mechanical model in a higher compressing ratio. Research and analyze the object-oriented product assembly model with which the parts compressed by the spreading method can be assembled in 3-D web format. Deep research on the browser plug-in technique and Active Template Library and design a browser plug-in with the latter, which has the functions of printing and displaying the 3-D product model, achieving the interactive operation of panning, rotating, zooming, selecting and hiding.The system has been proved to be proper and feasible through programming, debugging and testing and has realized above-mentioned function successfully.
