Augmented Reality (AR) is the merging of synthetic sensory information into a user's perception of a real environment. To apply the AR technology into the tele-operation field, this paper presents thorough discussions on the key technology of AR system based on monocular vision, and then uses it in an indoor prototype AR system. The key technology includes edge extraction and camera calibration. Firstly, this paper reviews the development of the AR technology, discusses the basic component of an AR system, and then points out the two factors which affect the performance of the AR system. Secondly, the edge extraction is studied. After the conception of digital image and gray scale were brought forward, the appropriate threshold value of the image procession is selected. when compares the arithmetic operators of edge extraction, this paper selects the Laplacian arithmetic operators as the proper one. The fundamental problem of the registration of the AR is the matrics transformation between the world coordinate, camera coordinate, image plane coordinate and pixel plane coordinate. Here, two camera models are discussed. One is the ideal model which does not consider the lens distortion, the other takes the faction into account. After calculates the inner and external parameters, we know the camera external position and orientation relative to world reference coordinate system as well as the effective focal length, radial lens distortion, and image scanning parameters. Then we can registrate the virture object to the real world. we use the AC-511 camera as the input equipment and ordinary PC display as output equipment. we implement the registration function.
