At present, the best effort service model of Internet has ever increasingdifficulty to meet the requirement of ISPs developing new real-time services,QoS requirement of clients and the problem of reasonable resource allocation. As a result, the QoS provision of IP and sufficient usage of network resourcebecome the research hotspot of IP network and NGI/NGN. The originalintention of MPLS is to achieve higher speed routing and forwarding, but alongwith the development of router performance, the MPLS technology has beenapplied in traffic engineering and VPN construction area. Especially, theadvantage of traffic engineering has become the main drive of MPLSdevelopment and the important development direction. In the MPLS architecture these is a separation between the data planeand the control plane which provide connection-oriented forwarding ability toexcellent extendable connectionless internet protocol, so MPLS enhance IPnetworks with advanced TE and improve QoS functionalities. MPLS trafficengineering (MPLS TE) improve network performance through networkresource optimization. In addition, MPLS TE introduces end-to-end QoSassuring ability with well extendibility to IP network by combiningconstraint-based routing (CBR) and connection-oriented label switch path(LSP).This article summarizes knowledge background of MPLS technology andsystem architecture based on detailed discussion on two QoS model viz.integrated service model and differentiated service model of IETF.Furthermore, it probes the main system architecture, realization mechanismand two signaling protocol of MPLS TE viz. RSVP-TE and CR-LDP. At last, theimprovement introduce by MPLS TE in IP network is analyzed through theexperiment scheme that traditional IP and MPLS TE are contrasted in real testenvironment.
