With the magic development of information technology, including semiconductor technology, computing technology and communication technology, tiny sensor nodes, which integrated with sensor unit, data processor unit and communication module, are emerging in the world. Those tiny sensor nodes can self organize to form a network, to sample the environment data or monitor the environment. Research of the wireless sensor network (WSN) gradually gets the focus of industrial and academe, WSN has a great application future in the military and civil area.Lots of foreign research institutions have started to develop sensor nodes with their own knowledge property, so there are many kinds of sensor nodes with matched software development platform. Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of sciences has also developed a series of sensor nodes named GAINS. Work of this paper is based on GAINS sensor nodes. In this paper, with the background of the current research of the development platforms for wireless sensor network, the main kinds of WSN development platform are compared and analyzed. Then a novel development platform to support the wireless sensor network design is proposed, and also the design of network protocols is provided. In chapter one, the origin and the development of wireless sensor network is introduced. Then in chapter two, the background and related work of this paper are given, including the hardware and software development platform. Some analysis and comparison of the existing MAC protocols of wireless sensor network are listed. In chapter three, the design of the platform based on ASMAC named GKit is explained explicitly, especially the task scheduler of the RTOS and the ASMAC protocol. In chapter four, the implementation of GKit is introduced in detail. The performance of task scheduler in GKit is analysed and compared with the one in TinyOS, and also the performance of ASMAC protocol with SMAC protocol in GKit. Some results are still provided. Finally in chapter five, the conclusion of this paper is given, also some future work are listed.
