Reed-solomon codes are block-based error correcting codes with awide range of applications in digital communications and storage.Reed-Solomon codes are used to correct errors in many systemsincluding:. Storage devices (including tape. Compact Disc,DVD,barcodes,etc).Wireless or mobile communications (including cellulartelephones. Microwave link, etc).Satellite communications.Digital television/DVB.High-speed modems such as ADSL, xDSL. Etc.In this text the RS decoder introduced is used in correcting thedata from the WOBBLE of DVD. When the blank discs are produced ,the address information is pre-writted in the disc by the factory. Beforewritting disc, OPU writes data in the accurate position according tothese address information. So the address information must be read outbefore writing the disc. Because the driver controls the OPU move tothe accurate position according to these address data , the correctnessof the address data is most vital. Therefore the address information ofwobble data must be corrected, this task is completed by specialhardware circuit of the drive chip. In this project I finish RS Decoderdesign by writing programs in VerilogHDL simulating in ModeSimand debugging in the FPGA of Xilinx.The different systems will use different RS encode and decodemethod. The length of the code block and the information length aredifferent in different RS coder. So we must design different coder inthe project. The spec of the RS coder in this text is according to thedata of WOBBLE.At first the paper summarized the optical storage will be the avery important property in the industry, and the importance of R&Dthe key-technology. Then introduced the RS coder for the WOBBLEbelow.In this text I introduce the basic conception of the RS encode anddecode, and explain the principle of the RS decode in maths.In the text we also introduce a common designed method for RSdecode named Pipleline. The arithmetic of Pipeline has two forms, onein the time field and another in the frequency field. The configurationof the pipleline RS decoder is explained in detail in this text. Iintroduce the hardware circuits in each part of the decoder, and I makesome advancing to make it easier for the hardware designing.When the driver access the data in the CD-ROM, large number ofdata exchanged between the driver and CD-ROM, these data are needto be corrected, in the different disc the RS coder are different, so thereare several RS coder in a DVD writer. In this paper I take the exampleof the RS decoder which is used to getting the WOB information fromthe compact disc, I introduce the design method of the RS decoderusing Verilog language.The RS decoder which I designed is based on the spec of actualDVD writer, so this RS decode is fix to request for a production: speed,area, dependability. And it is past in the test bench.
