Nowadays, more and more applications need embedded system, and users also require more on efficiency and performance. But the frequency of embedded MCU is much slower than PC and it is impossible for commonly embedded MCU to handle displaying large size, high quality, and consecutive image.This paper introduces a designing plan of hardware image enhancement for embedded system. It is different with commonly VGA controller, and except for generate video synchronization signals , embedded hardware image enhancement have many other functions, including:■ displaying large size(up to 1024×768), high quality(up to 16M colors) images;■ displaying 96 western characters;■ displaying hardware cursor;■ supporting 2D and 3D image enhancement;■ updating video memory in time;■ be controlled by embedded MCU and can send IRQ interrupt signals to MCU.The main works of this paper are:1. Study and synthesize common image enhancement technologies in PC ,and replant these technologies into embedded system.2. Design the architecture and functional module of the embedded hardware image enhancement with "top and down" method, and then debug it. Implementing a embedded "GPU" supporting to display large size, high quality images and western characters.3. In embedded system, use hardware image enhancement to help MCU finish displaying task , lighten the work burden of MCU. Then two application examples is provided.
