In this paper, I present an approach using wavelet transform for still image data compression and encode. The basic idea used is to perform 3 level wavelet transform on the image. The image is decomposed into sub images with various resolutions and orientations, which can be quantized and encoded with different techniques for matching the human visual system, in which various modulus perform different duties. They are the main module, wavelet module, quantize module and encode module. A 512 X 512 X 8 bit image can be compressed within 3 seconds in this system. It is demonstrated that excellent visual effects can be obtained from the reconstructed image even when the compression ratio reaches 20:1. |
