At present, with the development of multimedia communication, the multimedia technology is becoming a kind of technology that influences people's study, work and lives more and more. The compression technology of image undergoes over half a century of development: there are JPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPGE-4, H.261 and H.263 international standards mainly till now. These technologies have remarkable advantages in different applications.This paper discusses the theory of Multimedia and Vedio compression in the beginning, after that it introduces MPEG-4 Vedio compression & Coding technology and particularly one of MPEG-4 Codec Model - Xvid. In this paper, I analyzed the DCT and its usage in MPEG-4 Codec, and also introduced the Zero Coefficient DCT, Part Coefficient DCT arithmetic. Then achieve Xvid decode arithmetic optimize based on Part Coefficient IDCT decode method. The algorithm can reduce and simplify the operation of IDCT, Quantity and IQ effectively and increase the processing speed of Xvid Codec without causing distinct drop of the quality of pictures. In the end of this paper, I carried out speed verification of optimized decode arithmetic on the ARM ADS Plateform.Through the work on the project, I understand more thoroughly the technical of MPEG-4 Coding/decoding technology. The optimization to decode arithmetic can make the decode speed much faster which fits the application of Capability limited embedded system such as ARM Plateform much better.
