The future telecommunication network is developed in the trends of convergence, especially the convergence of IP network and traditional telecommunication network. In this trends, the Softswitch based Next Generation Network (NGN) becomes a remarkable research direction. Inthe architecture of NGN, a very important intelligent equipment which is called Media Server offering a series of media control capability including plentiful voice prompting, voice interactive response, media convergence and multimedia conference, make next generation network support flexible service.The method of Softswitch controlling media server hasn't been standardized. MGCP/MEGACO and MSML over SIP are two mature technologies now. This paper introduces and discusses their character.Intel provisons its media processing server software HMP which can run on the general PC platform.Before that, all media server should be implemented by hardware. Based HMP, this paper discusses several typical design shemes, and choose similar MSML as control model, designs the software architecture of UNIMS.This paper mainly resolves two issues:1.
