With the rapid development of Internet, remote education as a new teaching mode has been an important research topic in education field. The realization of experiment teaching is essential and difficult, and virtual lab is an efficient way to resolve this problem. This paper mainly researches the application and implementation of virtual network design system.Firstly, we analyze the computer network design experiment and its characteristic. Combined with the basic requests of remote education, basic requests of virtual network design experiment system are brought forward. Based on the requests, the design objectives are set.Secondly, we make a general design of the virtual experiment system, which includes: system function design, system structure design and interface design. Based on the whole design, the system's function, structure and interface schemes are decided. To fulfill the design, the following researches are done:1. Analyze and design the organizing network function in details, and implement it based on extending Form++ class libraries.2. Analyze and design the devices'link error detective function in details, and then using production representation represent the knowledge of determining link errors and form the rule base; and implement the function using production system.3. Design the storage mode and format of the knowledge in rule base and implement the rule base management function by file I/O operation.4. Study the commands of the devices'software-configuration, and implement the software-configuration module by using VC++.5. Study VRML, and add the 3D-display module to the virtual experiment system.By using this virtual experiment system, students can do network design experiment in a simple, cheap and efficient way without the limit of time, place and experiment device. Students can study the knowledge of network organizing, knowledge of network devices linking, commands of the devices'software configuration, and what's more, using the 3D-display module, students can have a vivid and clear view of different network devices from any angle.
