Revolution of the next generation telecommunication network architectures has been brought with the development of waveguide division multiplexing (WDM) technology. The great demand for bandwidth by IP data services can be satisfied by the broaden bandwidth from WDM requires flexible, reliable and real-time network management and control technology, in order to perform the important functions of optical network in the most effective way. Due to transmission impairment caused by the physical layer, routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for network management must take the performance of physical layer into account in order to guarantee the reliability of network and the quality of services. Transmission impairments originate from chromatic dispersion in fibers, nonlinear effects, polarization mode dispersion, node crosstalk, noise introduced by optical amplifiers, etc. The evaluation of transmission impairments requires modeling of every network component. The simulating model for fiber, Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EFDA),optical source and receiver have been established in this dissertation. The performance of waveform and bit error probability has been evaluated and general results are obtained using our simulation software.In Chapter 1, the general situation of optical network development and architectures and the technology of routing and wavelength assignment are briefly introduced. The transmission impairments introduced by the main components are discussed and the Microwave Photonic technology is introduced as complement. In Chapter 2, the design of software WdmSim is presented as whole. In Chapter 3, the performance evaluation model for the whole physical link is proposed in the system level base on the previous component models. Component models are designed into software modules to organize the component library. Simulation software is accomplished using software engineering method based on the component library. In Chapter 4, detail analysis of transmission impairments introduced by fiber is presented, including chromatic dispersion, self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing. The performance evaluation is completed using numerical method. In Chapter 5, the performance of optical link is obtained using the designed simulation software, which verifies the feasibility and practicability of the software.
