Along with the development of electronic and telecommunication , both the function level and the popular rate of the mobile terminals are unprecedented raised. A part of the mobile phones and PDAs are expanding towards the Smart Mobile terminals'direction. Since the performance of the hardware improved so quickly, it needs the operation system and the application software to strong and abundant. Linux is a free and open-sourced operation system. It's easy for anyone to custom it based on his need. And it's porting between different hardware architectures is easy. Several kinds of mobile phones and PDAs has been on sale one the market, and application development based on embedded-Linux is now becoming popular.Short message service is an important part of mobile business service. As the band of communication network increasing, the short message service will go forward from SMS to EMS and to MMS. In this paper, a method to support short message service, not including MMS, is improved based on embedded-Linux.The wireless terminal is based on Intel XScale PXA255 and MC388 GPRS module, which is produced by Simons. And the operation system is ARM-linux-2.4.18 .And the GUI is Qtopia 1.7, an product of Trolltech. In the realization of this platform, the main work are the hardware design, the establish of the software developing and debugging environment, the design and implementation of the short message service function, the realization of short message service programming based on QT .On the above-mentioned software and hardware platform, Designed an At Device Layer based on C++ and QTE programming used for Phone Server layer to communicate with the serial and the wireless module. On the foundation of At Device layer, according to the model of Server/Client, designed the Phone Server layer and coded and accomplished the function. Formed an dynamic lib named libqtopiaphone.so , so that the application layer could load and use it. When this finishing , designed the software structure of application layer, gave the realization methods of SMS's receiving ,editing and sending and EMS's receiving and transforming into EMAIL format. Finally, the performance of the software system was evaluated.
