Block artifact is one of major causations which reduce the quality of pictures in video coding, especially at the time of low bit rate. The method to reduce block artifact in international standard H.264/AVC is demonstrated, and the possibility to include parallel computation is analyzed.Coding and Decoding (Codec) standards are hot research objects since they are so close to human in normal life for information, entertainment and commercial activity. As is known, H.26x and MPEG-x standards are very popularly worldwide. The latest international standard H.264/AVC has been issued and makes our lives more colorful because of its better performances than those old Codec standards.China has established the first national audio and video coding standard (AVS) just after H.264/AVC, this takes the new situation to all Chinese local developers with self-owned intellectual property. An overview of the international standards relative to Codec is given in this dissertation firstly, then the generation reason of block artifact, the check method, the reduction strategy and test experiments. After comparing and studying de-blocking filter algorithms in nowadays Codec standards, a suggestion to improve deblocking filters is described and tested in software programming way. To keep almost the same complexity as the standard H.264/AVC, more 0.16dB of PSNR is obtained after filtering block artifacts in frames. Parallel computation is discussed in order to modify loop or switch operation times in deblocking filter programs.Lastly the thesis draws a conclusion and points out the on-going future research directions.
