The fault diagnosis and life expectancy of transformer have been always the keyissues in the design and maintenance of electric power grid. This study focuses on theresearch of the new method for transformer fault diagnosis and life expectancy-orienteddiagnosis. Based on the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of traditional faultdiagnosis methods, the Extension-bayes discrimination approach is proposed for thefault diagnosis of transformer. In this work, fault information is composed of faultcharacters and the results of DGA. In addition, together with probability and IEC, thetransformer fault is modeled for the purpose of the fault diagnosis. Based on the model, thetypeoffaultscouldbedeterminedbasedonthedetectedfaultinformation.Based on diagnosis technology and the statistics from fault equipments, lifeexpectancy-oriented diagnosis is also proposed in this study. When the life of thetransformer is assumed to be subjected to weibull distribution, the model of transformeris establishedbasedontheavailablestatistics, togetherwiththeanalysis of reliabilityaswell. The schedule of the maintenance and equipment replacement for the transformercanbeoptimallyarranged.
