In recent years, virtual environment is a hot topic in computer graphics. The main features of virtual environment are multi-sensory, immersion, interactivity and imagination. Along with the rapid development of hardware and the quick reduction of cost, virtual environment is widely applied in the fields of medicine, construction, manufacturing, interactive entertainment, E-Sports, military and so on.Virtual Networked Marathon(VNM) System, developed by Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and CISS(China Institute of Sports Science), is one example of trying to combine virtual environment with E-Sports. With the help of computers, sensors, multimedia, network and running machines, the system supports multi-user to train or compete in a virtual scene. With VNM project, this paper explores how to use game engine to solve some key problems when developing a virtual environment system. First of all, the characteristic and key techniques of VR are described. Moreover, game engine is discussed. It has great potential for scientific research and can be a powerful tool for the development of virtual environment system.According to the project's requirements and features of the game engine, the framework and hierarchical structure are employed to construct VNM system. In addition, taking the virtual walkthrough module of VNM as an example, this paper illustrates how to implement the main functions with the help of game engine, including skeleton animation, terrain rendering, sky rendering, natural interaction between human and computer and so on.The realistic of graphics is one of the core performance criterion of a virtual environment system. In order to improve the system, the dissertation discusses High Dynamic Range Rendering (HDRR), which is a hot real-time technology. The scalability of the game engine is explored and the GPU based high dynamic range rendering is implemented to enhance the visual effect of the system.
