VCEG(Video Coding Experts Group) and MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) published H.264, which is a new standard for video compression coding. Movement estimate is the key technology of video compression, which dominates the performance of compression and the time for calculating. So it is mainly studied to search a brief fast efficient algorithm of movement estimate for video coding. In H.264 there are three new technologies of picture transaction applied to movement estimate, which are multi-reference frame, multi-mode and fractional-pixel precision. New technologies become new field to be studied. So the paper based on these and studies every part of course of movement estimate to make its algorithm to be better. The material contents are as follows.Firstly, in the paper the technology of fractional-pixel precision block matching for movement estimate is studied. Its three parts, the initialization point for searching and pixel searching and sub-pixel searching, are studied and their algorithms are improved. As a result, the number of pixels for searching descends and the efficiency of coding is enhanced.Secondly, the technology of multi-mode prediction coding for intra-frame and inter-frame is studied. The algorithm of selecting mode for intra-frame prediction is improved by the method of using adaptive thresholds. Then the algorithm of inter-frame prediction is improved by the application of spatial correlation and temporal correlation. As a result, the number of modes for searching descends and the efficiency of coding is enhanced.Thirdly, three technologies of movement estimate based on multi-reference frames and multi-mode and fractional-pixel precision are studied as a whole system. The number of reference frames and the problem of how to select thebest reference frame are analyzed. Then a new algorithm of movement estimate, which supports these new technologies, is presented based on these algorithms presented above in two items. As a result, the period of movement estimate becomes short and the efficiency of coding is enhanced on the condition of coding quality.Finally, Experiments are made to prove the performance of these new algorithms. Then we can find that they are better than others by analyzing the result of the experiment and the anticipated results are realized.
