With rapid development of video & multimedia traffic, the traditional optical transport networks designed for voice traffics no longer meet the demand on data traffic. Data traffic is more dynamic and unpredictable so it asks for a dynamic management. We want the network can configure resources as soon as possible so we can make use of the network efficiently to provide services. A network rose up at this moment, it is called automatically switched optical network (ASON). With its Control Plane, ASON can operate network resources dynamicly and can provide various survivable mechanisms for network protection and restoration. This paper focuses on ASON survivalbility and circles around a few of key protection & restoration mechanisms. My main achivements and works as follows: The GMPLS-based architecture of ASON networks is introduced, then we do deeply research on some kinds of protection & restoration mechanisms in ASON enviorenment, especially rerouting mechanism. Schemes for rerouting mechanism are designed and executed. After simulation, data is collected and analyzed. P-cycle is a preconfigured protection mechanism in network. P-cycle can provide fast protection switching and efficient resource utilization in ASON networks, so it is valuable to investigate the deployment of P-cycle. In this paper, the application of P-cycle for protecting both static and dynamic traffics in ASON networks is studied, simulation data is collected and analyzed at last.
