| Guidance books for elementary and high school students constitute astrange phenomenon in the Chinese press and educational circle.Guidance books make an important section of publication andtherefore draw considerable attention from publishers. The developmentand change in guidance books publication not only determine the size,characteristics, profit, and trends of the Chinese press, they also influencethe growth of teenage students and reflect the trend of Chinese education.As the competition in the guidance books market becomesincreasingly tough, various means of edition, publication, and distributioncome one after another. Owing to the unscientific publishing mechanismand unsystematic laws and regulations regarding publication, a host ofproblems have turned up, such as vicious competition in the market ofpublications, bad books intermingled with good ones, etc. With theseproblems, the press is puzzled, the educational circle feels helpless, andstudents and parents are troubled. This we call in this paper "thephenomenon of guidance books market".The academic and the press circles have been investigating thephenomenon, but haven't achieved any systematic results. The author,who has ten years of experience in guidance books publication, seeks toconduct a systematic and scientific analysis of the phenomenon from atheoretical perspective. The thesis first clarifies the concept of guidancebooks, and then divides the development process of guidance books intoseven periods. It focuses on the phenomena arising during the wavering period and the reasons for them. It also proposes a number of strategieslike forming an association of guidance books publishers and developingelectronic guidance materials in the hope that the guidance books marketwill become normative and flourishing and that guidance books will playa true role of guidance in education and creation for every user. |
