| Medium and short range wireless networks play more and more important role in many fields with the development of computer technology and modern communications technology. But the energy limitations of the nodes in the networks has gradually become the bottleneck which impedes its fast development and application, thus the energy-efficiency of the MAC protocols is very important. The article will focus on this issue. The article makes contribution as described in the following paragraphs.In this paper we'll first summarize medium and short range wireless networks. We explain the basic function of MAC and their related problems in wireless channel. In this paper MAC protocols in networks are classifiedly discussed and IEEE 802.15.4 is compared with IEEE 802.11.In this paper we summarize the general problems of energy optimizing of MAC protocols in medium and short range wireless networks. We analyze the factors of energy consumption and present the principles of optimizing energy, and the technologies of energy saving in IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 systems.We set up an energy model on NS-2 platform for WPAN nodes. Based on the previous work, we study the energy-efficiency of the MAC sub-layer in one of the WPAN IEEE 802.15.4 standard under the Ad Hoc circumstance and star-network with simulation tests. |
