With the rapid development of Internet's expansion and diversification, network performance monitoring and management are strongly required. It is very important to understand network behaviors due to network management, network planning and network development. The network traffic measurement technology is one way of network measurement, and monitoring and analyzing network traffic is an effective method to researching the traffic characteristics and getting network status.Firstly, research background of traffic measurement is analyzed, and the significance of traffic measurement is expatiated. Then, the technology of network measurement and indicator system are deeply studied; The active and passive measurement methods are particularly discussed and compared. By using the theory of network flow analysis, the method of flow analysis such as TCP/IP is expatiated. In addition, the traffic collection technology is analyzed in further detail. In the end, different types of traffic are discussed, the structure of traffic collection is analyzed and the technologies of flow capturing based on devices and softwares are summarized and compared in parallel.Based on the theory of traffic measurement mentioned above, a network traffic monitoring system based on Linux (FMonitor) is designed and implemented. The design aim and framework of this system are thoroughly discussed. The data packet capturing module,packet analyzing module,database module and Web presentation module, composed of the system, are detailedly expatiated. In data packet capturing aspect, the data flow collection is realized by using the data packet capturing library under Linux and the framework of traffic collection based on multimode. In data packet analysis aspect, the realization is implemented by making use of the data analysis based on traffic sampling; Several kinds of traffic, such as TCP/IP, P2P, Netflow and sFlow, are supported. At the same time, the detailed database structure of the system which is used to store traffic data and statistic information is presented. In the course of implementation, the development and running environment of the system is described and the system deployment is introduced; According to the system flow chart, the related functions are presented. The implementation of the system's functions is described. The key technologies adopted by the system are studied.Finally, the whole work is summarized and some ideas and pieces of advice are brought forwards for the future work.
