Along with the increasingly demand of information in our society, new method of communications such as wireless LAN, wireless WAN etc. develops rapidly. The Wireless WAN, as a new network, which is considered as same important as 3G would definitely develop extensively. So, the security of wireless WAN become more and more important nowadays.The following article first introduces the development of wireless WAN standard; make a brief description of network mode and wireless WAN peculiarity. Then we discuss about the safety service which is most concerned in wireless environment, briefly introduces user certification, access control, encryption method, integrality and non-negation of datum. Bases on the introduction, the article particularly analyzes of security service of 802.16d and 802.16e series standard, describe the develop trend of wireless WAN from point of protocol-analysis view. After summarizing the advantages of all wireless series standard, we make a particular analysis about security method which adopted in 802.16 series standard, and gotten an evaluation of its security: The 802.16 series standard assimilates experience of all other wireless standard, take much time in improving information security, it is enough for normal business and individual requirement. But, the standard also has many hidden trouble, and all these problem exists in physical layer, user certification and encryption process in different degree. The main reason which causes the 802.16 series hidden trouble is that the standard doesn't adopt bidirectional-certification, no reliable base point, these problem extensively limits its application, at lease it can't getting use in government. The article also draws a comparison among 802.16 series, 802.11 series and 802.20 mobile series standards, make a clear understanding about wireless standard's past and future. At last, we bring forward an elementary plan for checking wireless WAN security in technical method; and then, combine with the actually work, consult about other wireless LAN security means, we put forward some new idea for using wireless LAN safely.
