As a Logistics Company, with competition intensifying in many sectors and customer expectations evolving, prospering in today's global markets requires transportation logistics that support the dynamics of order flow and fulfillment across domestic and international moves to continually improve productivity, cost savings and on-time delivery. Therefore this thesis is designed for the B&B Logistics Company to meet their customers' requirements in having complete real-time consignment status information over the web, whilst saving work load on the staff time previously devoted to answering queries on order status.Traditional approaches to managing transportation logistics simply cannot meet such customer expectations, with its associated rigid protocols, high costs and lack of customer friendliness. Web-based systems are far simpler and substantially cheaper, as a result, electronic dealings with customers are becoming even more widespread in large companies. Visibility throughout the entire process must be completely transparent to achieve full customer satisfaction and leverage the full benefits of Elogistics; meaning E-business in Logistics. This thesis outlines the design, development and implementation of a Mobile Transportation Management Application of an Elogistics System. The basic functions designed of this application is to provide response to a customer after placing orders online, to check on order status, track and trace consignment of goods as its being transported. The transporting or delivery units of these goods are equipped with GPS(Global Position System) as a source of location data and a wireless connection to the Internet,(more specifically the World Wide Web), as a distribution medium for this data to customers. These units report their current locations periodically, generating updates, which are sent to the central database server(Web Data Center) through a mobile network using handheld devices. This thesis studies the Location Based Service(LBS), Intelligent Transportation System(ITS), Mobile Asset Management(MAN) and the technical characteristics of the internet to get an in-depth analysis of the mobile data management transportation logistic system. It outlines the basic architecture for the system, giving the detailed development of the elogistics transportation system using. NET Framework. This thesis presents the functional requirements including; order processing, customer service, map navigation, tracking movement of goods, receive real-time data of delivery unit, nonfunctional requirements and design constraints for the system developed, using UML diagrams to help model and specify the functional requirements and specifications of the system. It also gives the detailed design issues of the system, including physical design and logic design, which focuses on the database design, abstract interface design and describes how the transportation application is implemented using the C#. NET, SQL Server 2000 and MapPoint Web Services is integrated which provides the web mapping service for the implementation of the GPS system. In this system the web data center WDC, designed and implemented, effectively resolves the data sharing problem; efficient system interface and clear user interface provides good technical support to enhance efficiency of logistic company's running and cut cost. |
