Computer relay protection devices have been in great demand in thepopular trend of computerization of relay protection devices in electric substations of China during the last twenty years. General platforms are particularly useful to improve the development of relay protection devices, regarding these aspects as speed, cost, quality, use and maintenance.According to the requests of mature relay protection devices, we discuss requirements, architectures, hardware and software of computer relay protection platforms. First, we abstract general requirements of development platforms and their influences on designs. Second, we introducea design of flexible architecture consisting of analog-inputs, I/O expanding interface and I/O control bus, with adjustable number of analog-input channels and I/ O channels to meet with a large range of needs.We then enumerate hardware designs of universal modules and means to compose these devices, introduce general design, components decomposition their interfaces of control software, anti-interference measure on both hardware and software,also the perfect performance of this kind of computer relay protection services used in Shtar Science & Technology Group electric power system.
