Changsha, capital of Hunan province, is one of the media-developed cities in China. There is a drastic competition between different media companies and thus the existing status and development foreground of news media have experienced a very big change, which is also popular in other domestic cities, especially provincial capitals. This thesis takes the news media's competition in Changsha as an example and makes a careful study on the essentials, misunderstandings and development trends in the future on the media competition in the same city based on the relative theories on news business and typical cases. This thesis holds that the reasons for the popularization of media competition in the same city is closely connected with the current status of news media, i.e., they are originally public service units but operated like profit-oriented enterprises. In China, media in the same city have several lays of administrative subjection relations from above to below vertically and horizontally. It is still keeping the leading position to manage the media according to their different subjection relations, which makes the competition end with games of administrative forces behind the media. However, under this condition, if the media enter the real market environment, it has to run according to the market rules and thus competition is inevitable. They have to fight in fields like report resources, news quality, edition ideas and so on.On the one hand, media competition in the same city typically reflects the development tenor and reform achievement of Chinese media industry in recent years—through competition, the strength of provincial and city media has been swelled, their social influence has been enlarged and their economic benefits has increased obviously; competition also furthers the information communication between different cities and accelerates the development of local spiritual civilization construction. On the other hand, due to the furiousness of competition and comparative deficiency of mechanism and management, it also presents some inner problems before us. For example, some media group doesn't have a clear or proper development goal so as to blindly extend its business; some only lays particular stress on profits so as to ignore the quality of news and reports and help the low-level and snobbish trend of news; news itself from different media groups is of severely abnormal homogeneity and competition order is in a bad chaos. Generally speaking, the mainstream of competition is positive and energetic. With the renewal of competition ideas and perfection of competition rules, the space for media competition in the same city will be gradually enlarged—those media groups will surely begin their contending in new fields like resource integration, content otherness, territorial development, digital operation and others. It is no doubt the development of our news media will obtain more powerful impetus.
